High-Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Nepal

The station is located in the saddle between the two peaks Jungfrau (4’158 meters asl) and Mönch (4’107 meters asl.). The height of  the station is about 3500 meters. The aim of the campaign was to investigate new particle formation in the free troposphere in continental Europe.

The campaign was very successful and the results have been published in Science. In addition to that we were also able to confirm the results obtained at the CERN laboratory in the framework of the CLOUD experiment. It was found that aerosols can be formed from organic compounds – until then sulphuric was expected to be the necessary compound for these processes.
